Wines are available in a number of different types and organic wines are one type that is getting more and more attention these days. Organic wines are processed from grapes which are grown without the use of synthetic fungicides or fertilizers. In vineyards where biodiversity is encouraged, vines are grown with the help of living soil i.e. soil full of worms and bacteria which helps to draw the maximum level of minerals from soil. The wines which are grown in living soil have good resistance to disease. Biodiversity also creates an eye catching landscape.

Grape growing is organic by origin but not all vineyards are organic. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is in charge of regulations for organic food products. USDA defines organic food as ‘the food which is produced by farmers with the help of renewable resources and by conversion of water and soil which enhances the quality of environment for future generations’. Organic farming is done without the use of harmful pesticides or fertilizers or any ionizing radiation. Before declaring the farm as organic the government inspects the farmland and checks that the farmer rules of to meet the standards set by United States Department of Agriculture.

The Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) did not give permission for wines to be designated as organic. This decision of ATF was challenged by Hallcrest Vineyards. Since then few of the wineries have become certified processors of organic wines.

Organic wines are of four types:

? 100% organic: Produced with 100%organically grown grapes and contain no added sulphites.

? Made with organic ingredients: They have at least 70% of organically grown grapes and may contain sulfite.

? Organic: They contain at least 95% of ingredients from certified sources.

? Some organic ingredients: Thus, before buying organic wine one must know the difference between the four categories of organic wine.

The wine which is processed from organically grown grapes and which also gives information about its certifying agency is labelled as organic and is sealed by United States Department of Agriculture as ‘organic wine’. Such wine does not contain any added sulfites but can consist of natural sulphites which must be less than 20 parts a million. Sulfite is a preservative of wine which is commonly known as sulphur dioxide. Sulfite has antioxidant properties and also some antimicrobial properties. It is a controversial topic whether it is possible that wine could be sulfite free. The producers of organic wine have to undergo various inspections by the organisations to get the organic certification.

Reconversion is the process by which conventional vineyards are converted to fully organic vineyards. The whole process takes up to 3 years to complete. The use of non organic treatment is strictly prohibited in the organic vineyards. As per law all the organic claims of wine are to be mentioned on the label so that one can read the label and can come to know about the contents of the bottle. Organic wines are a gem of ecosystem. Organic wines do not contain any harmful ingredients as the conventional wines.

One of the easiest plants to grow and from which you can reap fast rewards is the ever popular tomato.

With just a little planning and not much hard work, you’ll find growing tomatoes will satisfy your sense of achievement. They can be grown almost anywhere, in containers, greenhouses, balconies or the garden bed.

You can start them from seed easily; the varieties and choices you have to suit your tastebuds are endless, and you can expect abundant harvests, with few guidelines to follow. Home-grown tomatoes taste a lot better than commercially grown ones because you can pick and eat them fresh from the plant. You can get a better quality, tasting tomato from the seed catalogues and they give you a much wider range of tomatoes than any supermarket could possibly offer. The descriptions will help you find tomatoes that are exceptional and suited to your taste and environment.

You can start from seed or seedlings, why not experiment with both if you’re a novice. If you are starting from seed then sow them indoors several weeks before you expect the last frost in your area and they will be ready to transplant outdoors when the soil warms up. Aim to give them a minimum six hours of sunshine. Prepare the soil, ensuring that it is well drained. To give a flying start to your season adding mushroom compost to the soil which works wonders for the seedlings.

When transplanting seedlings, bury all the seedling stem below the ground, leaving only the top leaves exposed. This encourages roots to grow the full length of the stem, which is below soil level, giving you a large root system. This in turn gives you larger healthier fruit and is a little trick my grandfather taught me; works fantastic too.

If your particular plant requires staking, put the stake in the hole first to save damage to the rooting system. Be sure to water your plants as soon as you have transplanted them, you can use a seaweed fertilizer at this point.

When growing tomatoes make sure the conditions remain constant throughout the growing season, that means maintain a moist soil and do not let them dry out as you risk them being exposed to the disease blossom end rot, or you may find that the fruit will crack. Check the soil regularly; cheap gauges are readily available for this purpose. On the other hand don’t over water as waterlogged soil causes fungal diseases.

When growing tomatoes keep a sharp eye out for the first flowers to appear, you can then use a liquid fertilizer every couple of weeks and a little potash can be added at this stage. Do not make the mistake of thinking the more fertilizer the better; this will only result in excess foliage growth and reduced fruit production.

When the weather warms up use organic mulch around your plants to save precious water; to encourage more root growth and a stronger plant you can build the level of the mulch right up to the level of the bottom leaves.

If you have no garden or limited space then all is not lost; you can grow tomatoes in pots or containers; there are many miniature and cherry varieties to choose from. A 16 - 20 inch pot is about right, just use a potting mixture instead of soil. Remember to check your pots regularly for water as they will dry out quickly, especially in summer. A self watering container makes the job easier and if you can install a tap on the balcony, it would save carrying water through your apartment. Don’t limit yourself to tomatoes, with a little thought you can grow lots of other things like herbs, lettuce, egg plants, etc. just by using containers.

It’s a fact that organic vegetable gardening is becoming a favourite with farmers as they can grow the same amount of crop with less money. You must become familiar with the rules of organic vegetable gardening, before you try this at home. Foremost, organic vegetable gardening does not use any manmade fertilizers, nutrients or pesticides. Nature is your friend here because you will be using two things to make it all work, chiefly sunlight and water. Unfortunately these can never be made artificially, you have to find the perfect place for it and provide right kind of drainage facilities.

Apart from sunlight and water, you can help the crops grow by using compost heap from leftover food, chipped bark, garden compost, leaf moulds and manure. You can combine these all together and then spread this around your garden. A lot of people are scared off by natural fertilizer but you don’t have to scoop this from the toilet because this is sold in stores. Chickens are a good idea; simply let them free to walk all over your garden. Some individuals prefer to use dead carcasses of animals or meat products - for this, leave them in the trash can, till maggots come out and then use it as a fertilizer.

Earthworms are great helpers in the garden as they help to bring out several nutrients from the soil by digging deep thereby oxygenating it, which act as good water drainage also. Earthworms are also beneficial as they leave their droppings all over the garden, which are rich generators of nitrogen phosphorus and potassium. Organic vegetable gardening is no mean task as you have to effectively combat several enemies in the process and these include armyworms, crickets, gypsy moth caterpillars, slugs and squash bugs. Earlier fertilizers were employed to get your garden free from such pests, but when you go organic, you can keep some toads in the garden, which are anticipated to eat up all these and more. When it comes to battling spiders or caterpillars, get a few birds to do the necessary, as they are found unsavoury by toads.

In some cases, you don’t have to buy a toad or a bird from the pet store because they may come in to your dwelling as long as you set the ideal environment for them. Just build a birdhouse or dig a pond and you would be soon welcoming these Samaritans. Different insect killers which you can get to do the job include the praying mantis and the ladybug because they mark their territory and eat anything that dares enter their domain.

Vegetables can also be guarded by plants. For instance, the rosemary, sage or thyme are effective deterrents against butterflies and Marigolds are effective against nematode worms. But despite all the plants and fauna that nature has to offer, crop rotation is seen as the foremost way to keep the soil productive when you have an organic vegetable garden. Carry on rotating the kind of vegetable you have harvested in one season with another and then come back to the initial vegetable. Actually the rules concerning organic gardening are pretty simple to follow and after practicing for some time, you will get used to it.

Perfect soil

What is the function of soil in our yards and gardens? Simply put, soil provides plants with mineral nutrients, water and anchorage. The basic types of soil are clay, sand, and silt. The percentage of each determines whether you have sandy clay loam, silt, loam, etc.  There are so many variables that affect soil that your yard may have a different soil type than the one across the street.

Some soil properties that are influenced by the texture of soil include aeration, drainage, water holding capacity and temperature. For example, sandy soil has excellent aeration, warms quickly in spring and has a low water-holding capacity. The exact opposite is true for clay. It has poor aeration, warms slowly, and has high water-holding capacity.

Here are the four major components of soil:

The solid portion, or rocks and minerals Decaying organic matter, microorganisms, living or dead plants and other organic matter Liquid Soil air

Amounts of each of these components determine whether or not plants will grow and thrive in the soil. Ideal or perfect soil consists of 25% air, 25% water, 40% mineral matter and 10% organic matter. As you already know, this never happens!

However, what we do to improve our soil will affect our plants.

You can re-mineralize your soil by adding Minerals Plus or Texas Greensand. You can increase organic matter by adding a good organic compost. This also increases earthworm activity and beneficial bacterial growth.  Spray-N-Grow increases microbial activity that helps keep air and water moving in the soil. To find out more about your soil, use the Sunleaves Three Way Meter.  It allows you to test your soil for pH, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium and will give you immediate results.

Naturally, some soil needs more work than others, but with a little work and some good organic garden products, you can pretend that your soil is perfect! All of the gardening products listed in this article can be purchased from Spray-N-Grow.

How to de-bug your garden

Did you know it is estimated that there are over 100,000 different species of insects that live in North America? If you don’t think you have bugs in your garden - guess again. In a typical backyard there are probably 1,000 little critters setting up house.

Remember, not all insects are bad. Less than three percent of all insects are classified as pests. Different plants attract different insects. You will not find a corn worm on a tomato plant, because it’s digestive system simply cannot handle it.

It is helpful to know the insects that live in your area. This will enable you to avoid insect infestation by planting plants that these insects do not eat. This is the safest, most environmentally friendly way to de-bug your garden.

Unfortunately, this will probably not be enough to keep all destructive insects out of your garden. For many gardeners, it is necessary to use insecticides. When using insecticides, you will have maximum results if you know what kind of insects you have. Always read the label on the insecticide and follow all directions. Make sure that it is labeled for use on your plants and insects. Whenever possible, use organic insecticides that are nontoxic. This will allow you to effectively rid your garden of harmful insects, while minimizing harm to the environment.

Here are some indicators that you need to de-bug your garden:

Do your leaves have holes in them?

This is an indication of a chewing insect. To control chewing insects you have to find out what kind of insect it is. It could be a caterpillar, grasshopper, or beetle, or one of many others. Look under the leaves in the morning, or just after dark. That is when they like to eat. Most people do not realize that they have bugs, because they hide during the heat of the day.

Is your plant discolored, drooping, wilting or generally lacks vigor?

Often times, sucking insects cause this type of damage. These critters do not eat outer surfaces of the plants, so some insecticides will not affect them. It is necessary to use a contact insecticide to eliminate sucking insects. Contact insecticides come in direct contact with the insect’s body and kill by burning, asphyxiation, or paralysis. The insecticide must actually “contact” the pests to kill them.

Is your tree full of holes, dripping sap, or do you have a pile of sawdust-like matter around the base of the tree?

Boring insects, (and we do not mean ones without a social life either) can do quite a bit of damage to trees before they emerge into their adult form. Borers may be directly attacked. When their tunnels are open, they may be impaled on a piece of wire. If they cannot be reached that way, they can be smothered by Bon-Neem Insecticidal Soap Concentrate or killed by Bonide Rotenone-Pyrethrins Concentrate, made with naturally occurring pyrethrin. These concentrates are available through Spray-N-Grow.

These are just a few ways you can de-bug your garden. The bottom line is…if you have healthy plants to begin with, you will probably be doing a lot less de-bugging in your garden!

It’s one thing to have a 72-hour emergency kit and be prepared for a short-lived disaster, yet quite another to stock up on food supplies for an event that is much longer in duration. There are a number of excuses for focusing solely on a shorter-term disaster survival plan, but what if you were required to be self-sustaining for weeks, months, or even longer? It’s not a fun topic to dwell upon, but it is something to prepare for, even if its use never comes into fruition. Kind of like insurance, you can take comfort in knowing if it ever was necessary, you are at least covered.

One of the most useful additions to a long-term food supply is heirloom seeds. These beauties are extremely important for many reasons. Heirloom seeds are not genetically modified (non-hybrid). This makes it possible to gather seeds from your veggies to reuse season after season. Even if your focus was more on frugality and good health (non-GMO), these seeds are the best way to go.

Imagine a situation where a person (maybe you) did not have much extra space to store MRE’s, dehydrated foods, freeze-dried items, canned goods (and the like), does have enough seeds to be able to produce an output more than all of these things combined year after year indefinitely. Wouldn’t that put a hefty premium on these puppies in a circumstance in which they were called for? Much like having a good water filter should be a high priority on your long-term emergency supplies list because you can literally suck gallons of safe drinking water out of lakes and streams, heirloom seeds are your food counterpart to this equation.

Ever find yourself wondering what else you should add to your emergency preparedness regimen? Take it from this angle– how can I leverage all of these items for the benefit of myself and others should we ever need to put them to use? Then you might decide to store things that you personally might not use, but could barter with someone else to get something that you want that hadn’t occurred to you during your preparation efforts. And, bingo, heirloom seeds are just the ticket to add to your storage, because you can either trade the produce you get from the growing of them, or some of the heirloom seeds themselves. They will be more precious than gold in times of need!

Heirloom seeds are such a practical addition to your long-term emergency food storage. And you’ll be surprised at the variety of this type of seed that is on the market today. If you’re a gardener already you should experiment with heirloom seeds. You’ll find that you won’t want to go back to hybrid seeds afterwards. The heirlooms are natural and prolific!

Don’t you know the different categories of wines available? Don’t lose your heart when we are there.

Wines can be produced from any vegetable and fruits. But the most commonly used is grapes which are normally referred to as grape wine or simple wine. Wines fall into three basic categories – the white, rose and the red.

Wines contain sugar in them. The wines with less sugar content will be drier than those wines which have more sugar. If you have visited a wine store, then you will be able to remember that the bins are classified as numbers say 1, 2, 3 etc. The wine bin which has the highest number will contain the sweetest wines.

The normal wines contain alcohol anywhere between nine percent and twelve percent. But sherry, port as well as brandy contains alcohol at a minimum level of twenty percent.

The alcohols which are distilled are known b y the name of spirits. The alcohols like sherry, port and brandy are the distilled form of grape wines. But liqueurs are normally distilled forms of fruit wines. These types of distilled wines are used before meals. These may be or may not be accompanied with an appetizer.

Table wines are served surprisingly with the dinner. These types of wines have a dry nature which will complete the food which is served. The general rule for serving table wine is that:

1. if you are serving red meat, then serve only red wine and

2. if you are serving white meat, then serve only white wine.

But if you do not know which wine to serve, then you can opt for a rose wine.

The category of wine which can be served as dessert is the dessert wine like sauternes.

One can serve sweet wines or wines that are fortified, after the dinner.

The region of Murcia in Spain is famous for its old world character, rich history and gorgeous weather. Connoisseurs know that Murcia is also synonymous with wine. Wine lovers who want a Spanish holiday with class and good taste, consider Murcia’s history.

Murcia’s wine is produced in the region of Jumilla. It covers the northern part of Murcia and the south-east portion of Albacete. It boasts 33,000 hectares of wine-producing grapes. Its vineyards turn out 220,000 hl of wine every year. In fact, the region actually comprises five separate denominations of origin. Each DO is closely regulated by the local government. It helps to ensure that only the best grapes are grown. In the case of organic wines (which are increasingly in demand), it ensures that growing regulations are followed. This provides quality assurance to consumers around the world. It is undoubtedly one of the reasons that Jumilla wines have been critically acclaimed in the last decade.

Superb cuisine and exquisite wine is as much a part of Spanish culture as language and heritage. This tapestry of culture is what fuels the wine industry in Spain, and Jumilla, Murcia in particular. Jumilla wines are acclaimed the world over. Thousands of tourists flock to the region annually to get a firsthand look at the production of Jumilla wine.

Archaeological evidence suggests that the production of Spanish wines dates back to 4000 B.C. An abundance of native species of grapes likely fueled interest in the production and consumption of wine in the region. Wine production in Spain pre-dates the establishment of Cadiz, the oldest port in Spain, by a few hundred years. However, it was upon its founding that Spanish wines began to be traded around Europe. Later, Jumilla’s wine industry took new shape under the settlement of the Romans. Although Roman rule has long since disappeared, its culture still influences the production of Jumilla wine today.

The Reconquest of Spain, which began in 722 A.D., saw locals reclaiming the wine industry. Wine was a key component in the rituals of the various orders of monks and friars of the time. After ousting previous conquerors, they began to take back wine production. Wine-making flourished for several centuries. Wines from Jumilla became distinguished on the world market, thanks in large part to those early monks.

Notwithstanding, the region has seem some challenging times. Phylloxera has plagued the Spanish wine-making industry at various points over the last several centuries. One of the most recent phylloxera attacks in 1989 led to the replanting of thousands of hectares of vineyards in Jumilla. The new vineyards produced a lighter variety of wine than had previously come from the area. Naturally, the phylloxera attack was financially devastating to the economy. However, the newly produced wines fueled new and greater public interest in Jumilla wines.

The Jumilla Wine Route is famous with locals and visitors alike. Travelers can book a wine tour through their travel agent, online or in person in Murcia. A wide range of accommodations is available in the area to suit any budget. Rental villas, condos and hotels in variety of price ranges are abundant. There are also a number of hostels in Murcia. Several all-inclusive resorts in the area, including the world-class LaManga Club, attract many visitors each year. Other resorts are currently under development. When finished, Spain tourism officials predict a healthy boost to the local economy.

Wine lovers may find themselves enthralled and dazzled by the exotic and fruity wines of Murcia. In fact, connoisseurs find themselves returning again and again to the lure of the vineyards of Jumilla. It may be the wine-lover’s ultimate Spanish holiday.

The history of organic vegetable gardening dates back many centuries ago as the ancient civilizations relied on this livelihood and fishing to put food on the table.

Back then, nobody used fertilizers and pesticides but as the world’s increased in population, the demand for food also went up. To fill the gap, scientists decided to introduce fertilizers and chemicals to cut the harvesting time and make the vegetables bigger.

Organic vegetable gardening only made a come back in the 1980’s making an old practice new again when the US Department of Agriculture encouraged farmers to do it by giving them incentives. This made more farmers join the bandwagon which is also being done in Europe.

But organic vegetable gardening is not just eliminating the use of fertilizers and pesticides. Farmers will have to use other means to make crop grows such as compost, crop residue, crop rotation, integrated pest management and mechanical cultivation in order to preserve soil productivity and combat pests.

The International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements is the regulator these days that tells farmers across the globe how this should be done. Their recommendations help crops grow in 75 million acres of land across the globe.

Their strategy is focused on sustainable development so that the land used today can only be used by the next generation as we have left for them a healthy ecosystem.

Organic vegetable gardening has proven to be effective because since its inception in 1980. To prove this point, one study has pointed out that the amount of corn and soybeans produced using this method was almost the same compared to those who used fertilizers and pesticides. The best part is that this was achieved without using that much energy and without the risk of having harmful chemicals enter our bodies.

It has been estimated by one university that if developing countries also practice organic vegetable gardening, they too can also double or triple their crops without wasting money on buying pesticides and fertilizes.

One thing you have to keep in mind here is that a percentage of vegetables being consumed in the US are imported from other countries.

Because organic vegetable gardening is so easy, anyone can do it. This will enable you to plant your own vegetables at home instead of buying these from the supermarket.

The key to a successful harvest using organic farming is planning. You will need the land to plant these on that has adequate sunlight and an efficient drainage system so that they are able to get water.

If you are able to figure that out, the only thing you have to worry about is what to plant because some vegetables do not well under certain conditions that could be attributed to the climate and the type of soil in the ground.

Those who know what they can and cannot plant will save themselves time and money so they can focus on what works.

The history of organic vegetable gardening has now come full circle as we are doing what the ancients have practiced long before we were born. You can do your part by buying those that are organically grown from the supermarket or planting your own.

The end result is that we eat healthy without ever thinking if these contain any chemicals that may be harmful to our bodies.

James
