I want to have an organic herb garden. But I have waited to laong to start from seed. If I purchase herb seedlings that have been lightly sprayed is that ok? does the pesticide wash off? can I just prune off and dispose of the shoots that have been sprayed?

Yes- you can definitely start an organic herb garden with seedlings. It will be about a week and a half to two weeks before you harvest the new plants, so any pesticide residues should have washed off. Lowes and Home Depot often sell organic seedlings too, if you are interested.

Good for you for starting an organic herb garden! Herbs are some of the most low maintenance plants I’ve ever grown- just have plenty of sun and well-drained soil. I never water or fertilize mine either, unless we are in a severe drought. I also mulch the bed every year- it really helps keep insects off, conserve water, and enrich the soil.

I would check around to find other nurseries & see if what they have is not organic. Many nurseries offer organic & do not spray to begin with. It is a lot of fun by the way to go to the nurseries & see what they offer & what their prices range. The best one in my area to buy organic herbs & very unusual ones actually specializes in annuals. There are so many different thymes for example: lemon is one of my favoritest, silver is another; & I spotted some lime this year! Lots of folks are in the plant & herb business if you want organic go looking for some! Maybe even a friend will give you a start of theirs & then it is free & you can pass the favor on once yours is mature!
